New safer Kirkby streets project 'will make a real difference’

A new scheme aimed at making Kirkby and its community safer has been praised.

Ashfield Council, Nottinghamshire Police, and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner have teamed up with local companies to offer the Safe Space Accreditation Scheme.

Coun Dale Grounds, council member for Kingsway and Kirkby, has been working to deal with anti-social behaviour and shoplifting in the town – and welcomed the new scheme.

He said: “I was proud to help launch this scheme and I know retailers are delighted.

“When this scheme was launched last year in Sutton, councillors like Coun Warren Nuttall and myself said we wanted to make sure Kirkby was right at the front of the queue for further Safer Streets’ funding.

“Shoplifting has a massive impact on small businesses. This will make a real difference and we’re delighted to be able to work together to deliver this.”

Coun Warren Nuttall, who has lived in Kirkby all his life, is delighted the scheme has been rolled out in his hometown.

He said: “Kirkby is growing and we want to do all we can to attract businesses to invest and trade here. This scheme will do its bit to make residents feel safer and that is welcome.”
